Many researchers believe that diabetes is the epidemic that didn’t have to happen. To slow this scourge, they have identified the delicious foods you should be eating to keep your blood sugar under control.

The method of lowering your diabetes risk: Eat a Mediterranean diet. This diet predominantly contains fruits, vegetables, fish, olive oil, whole grains, beans, nuts and an occasional glass of red wine.

“Adherence to the Mediterranean diet may prevent the development of diabetes irrespective of age, sex, race or culture,” says researcher Demosthenes Panagiotakos, Ph.D., a professor at Harokopio University, Athens, Greece. “This diet has a beneficial effect, even in high risk groups, and speaks to the fact that it is never too late to start eating a healthy diet.”
